History

Danceworx was founded in 1988 and is the oldest student-run dance organization on the UC Berkeley campus! For over 30 years, we have been providing students with a creative outlet to choreograph, dance, and perform in a fun and supportive environment. The experience of sharing the stage with fellow dancers and friends is always a highlight moment for both our new and returning members.

Choreographers, who audition for their positions, select dancers at the beginning of each semester and hold practices for routines in various styles: jazz, contemporary, open, and tap. Throughout the semester, we host social events such as bowling, movie nights, and our end-of-the-semester banquet so our dancers can bond outside of practice; these are the friendships that create a smaller, more approachable community on a campus with over 30,000 students.

Each semester culminates in a showcase in Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. Our showcases attract over 500 attendees each semester and also feature guest performances from campus and local community groups to foster unity and promote diversity among the Berkeley Dance Community.
